On Monday 29 April, the CSC Alumni Team hosted the CSC webinar on, empowering women and youth in Uganda through social entrepreneurship, delivered by Commonwealth Alumnus James Otai.

This webinar addressed the CSC development theme of promoting innovation and entrepreneurship

The CSC’s Development in Action webinar series aims to highlight the work and research of Commonwealth Alumni across a range of development impact areas.

 About the speaker

James Otai is the Co-founder and Director of Business Development and Operations at Imagine Her (IH), a Uganda-based local non-profit organisation. IH works with rural communities to accelerate the power and potential of women, girls, and youth as active leaders and social entrepreneurs by creating sustainable solutions within their communities. At IH, James oversees programme implementation, leads systems development, spearheads the organisation’s sustainability programming, and manages human resources.

James Otai is a 2019 Commonwealth Shared Scholar from Uganda. He completed an MSc in Environmental and Business Management at Bangor University.

Entrepreneurial skills development for women and youth

In this webinar, James discussed the work of his organisation, Imagine Her (IH), in supporting women and youth in Uganda to overcome unemployment and other economic challenges through green entrepreneurship and innovation.

James also highlighted factors leading to economic dependency including climate change, leading to women and youth being trapped in a cycle of poverty. As a solution to address these challenges, James shared his work in delivering courses to equip women and youth in remote regions with skills in green and gender-inclusive entrepreneurship, leading to sustainable development. He also shared examples of young entrepreneurs and how their enterprises are creating positive change within the local community.

This webinar presentation was followed by an interactive Q&A session with Commonwealth Scholars and Alumni. A recording of this webinar is available to view on the CSC’s YouTube channel where you can also watch previous events in the series.
