Over 60 Maltese Commonwealth Alumni came together on Wednesday 25th November in Valletta alongside the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting taking place within Malta at the same time.
UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office Minister The Rt. Hon Hugo Swire MP attended and spoke at the event as did Executive Secretary of the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK John Kirkland. The evening reception was held at the University of Malta’s Valletta building.
259 Maltese Nationals have benefitted from a Commonwealth Scholarship since the scheme began in 1960 and Malta currently has one scholar on-award studying for her PhD at University College London. Commonwealth alumni include Malta’s representative judge to the European Court of Human Rights Vincent De Gaetano, and former Foreign Minister Joe Borg.
This was the first alumni event to take place within Malta in a number of years and the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission will be taking forward plans to implement a permanent alumni association in-country.
