On Thursday 16 March, the CSC Alumni Team were joined by Commonwealth Alumnus Jewel Kumar Roy for the Development in Action webinar series. Jewel shared a presentation on ‘FinTech: its uses and impact on sustainable development in Asia Pacific’.
Jewel discussed the role of financial technology (FinTech) in reshaping the financial sector and how it contributes to economic development globally.
This webinar addressed the CSC development theme of Promoting global prosperity.

About the speaker
Jewel Kumar Roy is currently Assistant Professor at the Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University in Bangladesh. As a researcher specialising in FinTech, he has published many articles on the subject in peer-reviewed national, international, and Scopus indexed journals. His research interests include blockchain, cryptocurrency, financial technology, financial econometrics, and sustainable finance.
Jewel Kumar Roy is a 2020 Commonwealth Shared Scholar from Bangladesh. He completed his MSc in Financial Technology (FinTech) at the University of Stirling.
Enabling finance to reach the people who need it most
In this webinar, Jewel provided an overview of FinTech and its potential for supporting sustainable development across nations in the Asia Pacific region. Highlighting FinTech’s takeover of traditional financial industries and how it has transformed the way in which people access financial services, Jewel emphasised that FinTech offered greater financial inclusion as well as supporting sustainable investments. Jewel also shared the key challenges within the industry and the future steps needed to strengthen FinTech’s potential for delivering positive change.
