In this webinar, Commonwealth Alumni Maryam Bashir and Cornelius Dodoo, the winners of the 2023 CSC Research Impact Awards (RIA), will discuss their winning articles and the important role of research and researchers in addressing global challenges and contributing to sustainable development through the implementation and uptake of their findings.

Maryam will discuss her experience as a researcher in identifying an innovative way to streamline the synthesis process of the potent anti-Tuberculosis (TB) drug, Bedaquiline. Cornelius will highlight his experience of conducting research on disease-causing microorganisms and developing an antibiogram, a tool in managing infectious diseases and reducing antimicrobial resistance.

Both will discuss their ongoing role in applying their research findings in the field of global health and contributing to real-world change.

The webinar will provide an opportunity for attendees who are currently completing or have completed research degrees to ask questions and engage with the speakers on achieving research impact.

The webinar will address the CSC development themes, Science and technology for development and Strengthening health systems and capacity.

The webinar will last for approximately one hour, including a Q&A session.

The CSC’s Development in Action webinar series provides an opportunity for Commonwealth Scholars and Alumni to present on their work and contribution to development across a range of contemporary global challenges and provide insight into ongoing research and action.

Open to all Commonwealth Scholars and Alumni, the monthly webinars will address one of the CSC’s six development themes and provide an opportunity for attendees to engage in real-time Q&A discussion on the topic presented.

Maryam Bashir has expertise in organic chemistry. Her work includes conducting research on developing synthesis process in the field of drug discovery and development.

Maryam is a 2020 Commonwealth Split-site Scholar from Pakistan. She is currently completing a PhD in Organic Chemistry at the University of Bristol and the University of the Punjab, Lahore.

Cornelius Dodoo is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ghana. He also serves as the Ghana Lead for the University College London Hospitals, University of Health and Allied Sciences, and Ho Teaching Hospital Health Partnership.

Cornelius is a 2010 Shared Scholar and 2013 Commonwealth Scholar from Ghana He completed his MSc in Drug Delivery and a PhD in Pharmacy at UCL School of Pharmacy.
