On 26 January 2023, a Welcome Home Event was held for recently returned 2021 Commonwealth Scholarship recipients from Ghana. The event was delivered by the British Council, on behalf of the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK (CSC).
The event provided an opportunity for recently newly returned Scholars to connect with Commonwealth Alumni and receive guidance on how to achieve their professional and development goals and make valuable contributions at a local, national, and international level.
The event opened with introductions from Keith McMahon, Deputy High Commissioner, Doreen Ameonu, Projects and Partnership Officer, British High Commission, and Nii Dodoo Doodo, Country Director, British Council. They each welcomed home recently returned Scholars and congratulated them on completing their studies and encouraged them to continue to be ambassadors of the CSC.
Sharing knowledge and experiences
As part of the event, Commonwealth Alumni Osei Asibey Owusu (2021 Split-site Scholar) and Roland Atanganunge Azuvugu (2021 Split-site Scholar) shared their experiences studying in the UK. Highlights from the discussion included the importance of creating impact, representing the CSC as alumni, and the importance of giving back to their communities through volunteering and other activities.
Following this, attendees were invited to a networking session to meet with Commonwealth Alumni and gain more insight into alumni experiences of returning home and their career journeys. The event ended with an information session about the in-country CSC alumni association, the Commonwealth Scholars & Fellows Alumni, Ghana (CoSFAG). The session was delivered by Commonwealth Alumnus Dr John Boulard Forkuor, President of CoSFAG (2010 Split-site Scholar) and Ama Freeman, CoSFAG Treasurer (2004 Scholar).
