Dr Ben Irving, joint winner of the 2014 Taylor and Francis Commonwealth Scholar Best Journal Article Prize, was presented with his award at a recent event at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in London.
Ben received his award from the Prime Minister of Tuvalu – and former Commonwealth Scholar – the Hon Enele Sopoaga, and Dan Trinder, Associate Editorial Director for Taylor & Francis.
The presentation was part of the Farewell Event 2015 for departing Commonwealth Scholars and Fellows. Other guests included British High Commissioners and senior FCO staff, and Commonwealth High Commissioners based in London.
Ben (2008 Commonwealth Scholar from South Africa, PhD Biomedical Engineering and Medical Image Analysis, University College London) was one of two joint winners of the 2014 prize, for his article ‘Computer assisted detection of abnormal airway variation in CT scans related to paediatric tuberculosis’. The other winner, Dr Sandhya Sukumaran (2008 Commonwealth Scholar from India, PhD in Aquatic Eco-Genotoxicology, University of East Anglia), will be presented with her award at a prize-giving ceremony in the near future.
Applications for the next Taylor and Francis Commonwealth Scholar Best Journal Article Prize will open later this year. Any Commonwealth Scholar currently studying for their PhD or who has submitted their PhD thesis within 48 months prior to the deadline for entries can apply. The prize comprises a cash prize of £1,500 and a year’s personal subscription to a Taylor & Francis journal of the winner’s choice.
