Dr Frances Owusu-Daaku and Dr Rita Akosua Dickson – Inspiring women in the field of pharmacy
“Women as Agents of Change” was the theme of Commonwealth Day 2011, and was also emphasised again by Her Majesty the Queen at the recent Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Perth, Australia.
In this alumni web feature we celebrate the diverse achievements of our female alumni across the Commonwealth. In Ghana, Dr Frances Owusu-Daaku and Dr Rita Akosua Dickson have inspired a new generation of women science students to pursue a career in pharmacy, whilst Dr Julie Makani from Tanzania has been undertaking pioneering research into sickle cell disease. In contrast, two of the alumni featured have a background in art. Dr Elizabeth Peri, a UK Scholar who studied fine art at the University of Nigeria, has gone onto a career in the civil service and the European Commission. Dr Sarah Thornton, a Canadian Scholar, has combined her interest in art and sociology in a career as a writer and critic.
