On Wednesday 12 October, the CSC Alumni Team welcomed Commonwealth Alumnus Dr Omojeme Adomi to speak about her work on eye health for the Development in Action webinar series. Dr Adomi’s presentation on ‘Private eye health care in Nigeria: a key to SDG3?’ addressed the CSC development theme of Strengthening health systems and capacity.
The CSC’s Development in Action webinar series aims to highlight the work and research of Commonwealth Alumni across a range of development impact areas.
About the speaker
Dr Omojeme Adomi is an experienced clinical optometrist with over 15 years of experience working in the private and public eye care sector. She is a low vision practitioner and heads the Optics Department at one of the major eye hospitals in Lagos State, Nigeria. In her role as the hospital’s Outreach Director and with her long-standing passion for public health education, Dr Adomi intends to bring about a change in health care service delivery in Nigeria, particularly around eye care.
Dr Omojeme Adomi is a 2017 Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholar. She completed her MSc in Public Health at the University of Liverpool.
Bridging the gap between private and public eye health care services
Ahead of World Sight Day on the 13 October, the webinar showcased this year’s theme of #LoveYourEyes as Dr Adomi discussed how eye health formed a key component of the public health agenda and was crucial to achieving many of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Goal 3 on good health and wellbeing.
Dr Adomi also talked about the importance of leveraging the private eye health sector, especially in countries like Nigeria where lower public healthcare resourcing offers limited access to affordable eye care services for many citizens. Finally, she shared her experiences as a Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholar and how this had helped her to put eye health care theory into practice in her local community.
