On Thursday 25 August, the CSC Alumni Team hosted the latest Development in Action webinar on ‘Turning barriers into possibilities: Parasport development in Kenya’ by Commonwealth Alumnus Stephen Ojwan’g. This webinar addressed the CSC development theme of Access, inclusion and opportunity.
The CSC’s Development in Action webinar series aims to highlight the work and research of Commonwealth Alumni across a range of development impact areas.
About the speaker
Stephen is passionate about increasing diversity and inclusion through sports and sport development, as well as promoting the broader social impact of sport in society. Prior to his scholarship, Stephen worked as a parasports coach with Kenyan special educational needs schools, the Kenya Special Olympics, and the Kenya Paralympics. He also served as a member of the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) sub-committee for the Commonwealth Youth Sport for Development and Peace Network (CYSDP).
Stephen Ojwan’g is a 2021 Commonwealth Scholar from Kenya. He is completing his MSc in Adapted Sport at the University of Worcester.
Addressing the constraints to participation in sport
In this webinar, Stephen discussed his ongoing Master’s degree research study on the development of parasports in Kenya. Through this research, Stephen’s aim is to formulate interventions and solutions to common constrains which limit elite and grassroots sports participation for people with disabilities in developing countries such as Kenya.
Stephen also talked about his experience of volunteering at the recent Commonwealth Games 2022 as well as other parasport opportunities he has been involved in during his Commonwealth Scholarship in the UK.
This webinar presentation was followed by an interactive Q&A session with Commonwealth Scholars and Alumni.
