Access to Commonwealth Scholarships through mentoring

The Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Alumni Associations in Nigeria and Sierra Leone are jointly delivering a series of webinars on Commonwealth Scholarships. This webinar is the first in the series and will explore the role of mentoring in increasing access to and the impact of Commonwealth Scholarships.

The webinar will consist of a panel discussion on existing regional mentoring opportunties in low and middle income countries (LMICs) and the challenges in accessing and utilising scholarship opportunities.

The objectives of the webinar are to emphasise the:

  • Importance of long term, post-scholarship/fellowship donor support to manage the challenges experienced by recipients by generating a commitment to the research and study outcomes between individuals, government, and the private sector in LMICs
  • Role of mentoring to support postgraduate students and early career researchers at an institutional level, especially in professional and interdisciplinary fields
  • Importance of research agendas adopting a systematic approach, where institutions in LMICs set the agenda based on their environment rather than that of international funders in order to have a positive impact on knowledge building
