In this webinar, Commonwealth Alumnus Professor M Shafiq-Ur Rahman will discuss his research on the feasibility of implementing public bike-sharing schemes (PBSS) in Bangladesh, particularly in Dhaka city, and the major issues that need to be considered. This research was published in the journal, Transport Research Part A: Policy and Practice.

Professor Rahman will share how his research has been implemented at the local level in Bangladesh at seven different locations, including Jahangirnagar University campus where he works. Following the guidelines suggested in the paper and working with a private company, Jobike Limited, PBSS was first introduced in Jahangirnagar University.

The webinar will also highlight the different research uptake strategies that have been performed and the UN Sustainable Development Goals addressed through the research.

Professor Rahman is the winner of the 2021 Taylor & Francis CSC Research implementation and uptake stream, part of the CSC’s Research Impact Awards (RIA).

This webinar will address the CSC development theme, Access, inclusion and opportunity.

The webinar will last for approximately one hour, including a Q&A session.

Professor Dr M Shafiq-Ur Rahman is a professor in the Department of Urban & Regional Planning at Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh. Over the span of his 22 years of career, he has held teaching positions at university, conducted research and consultancy on urban planning, regional development and transport planning.

He is an active member of many professional associations including Eastern Asia Society for Transport Studies (EASTS), World Congress on Transport Studies (WCTR), Bangladesh Institute of Planners (BIP). Professor Rahman is now serving as the Vice-President of BIP (national association of professional planners in Bangladesh). 

Professor Rahman is a 2009 Commonwealth Scholar and 2016 Commonwealth Academic Fellow and from Bangladesh. He completed his MSc in Transport and Academic Fellowship at the University of Leeds.
