On Friday 23 April 2021, the CSC Alumni Team hosted the latest webinar in the series featuring Commonwealth Alumnus Uzochukwu Alutu on the benefits of rigorous tax governance and the obstacles facing policymakers in Nigeria. The webinar addressed the CSC development theme, Promoting global prosperity.

About the speaker
Uzochukwu Alutu completed his MSc in Applied Economics at the University of Strathclyde in 2014 through a Commonwealth Shared Scholarship. He is an economist and policy analyst with expertise in public finance and development programming, and over seven years’ experience in assisting governments in Nigeria to strengthen governance systems in evidence-informed ways.
Beyond raising revenues: Tackling barriers to building stronger tax-governance links in Nigeria
In this webinar, Uzochukwu Alutu presented on the topic, ‘Beyond raising revenues: Tackling barriers to building stronger tax-governance links in Nigeria’. Uzochukwu started by discussing tax systems and the need for governments to impart tax education, including the societal benefits it brings, amongst its citizens. He presented research highlighting the importance of revenues, the need to go beyond raising taxes, and discussed the socio-economic effects of COVID-19, especially in the Nigerian context. He concluded his presentation by discussing policy options for improving government effectiveness to achieve UN Sustainable Development Goal 16: Peace, justice and strong institutions. The webinar presentation was followed by an interactive Q&A session.
