The Commonwealth Secretariat and the UNESCO International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa will be holding the sixth Commonwealth Research Symposium on Teacher Mobility, Recruitment and Migration in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 8-9 June 2011. Under the general heading of ‘Next Steps in Managing Teacher Migration’, there are two main themes for the symposium:

  • The provision of high-quality inclusive education in difficult circumstances, including the role and status of refugee teachers and the issues surrounding forced migration of teachers; and
  • Learning from the experience of the Commonwealth Teacher Recruitment Protocol[1] to help improve its future implementation and the design of new protocols.

As well as featuring presentations on the latest research on teacher migration, including forced migration, the Symposium will include participatory workshops resulting in practical tools that can be used to increase the effectiveness of teacher migration management. A wide variety of academics, practitioners and policy-makers are expected to attend.

The organisers will provide free accommodation and meals from the evening of 7 June to the morning of 10 June. Flights and visas will be the responsibility of the participants.
