‘Assessing the assessment – the Commonwealth Scholars perspective on primary education’, the second Commonwealth Scholars Regional Network Conference, took place on Friday 26 June 2015 at the UCL Institute of Education in London.
The event was organised by Florance Rampersad, 2014 Commonwealth PhD Scholar from Trinidad and Tobago (MA Educational Assessment, UCL Institute of Education) and member of the South East Regional Network. Focusing on the primary education system across different Commonwealth countries, the conference was a great opportunity for Scholars to discuss an issue that was generally outside their academic area. With 30 attendees, the event was a great opportunity to share personal experience, and compare the educational systems across a range of countries in an interactive, workshop format.
In addition to the Scholar presentations, the keynote speech on ‘Reflective Assessment‘ provided some fantastic insights into self-reflection. The session was led by Dr Mary Richardson, Senior Lecturer in Educational Assessment at the UCL Institute of Education; Member of the Executive Committee of the Philosophy of Education Society for Great Britain; and Member of the Froebel International Archive Executive at the University of Roehampton.
The Commonwealth Scholar presentations on ‘Assessing the secondary entrance assessment in Commonwealth regions’ in their home countries were given by:

- Herine Otieno, 2014 Commonwealth Scholar from Kenya (PhD Maths Education, Sheffield Hallam University)
- Ahsan Raza, 2014 Commonwealth Scholar from Pakistan (PhD Electrical Engineering, University of Sheffield)
- Nsikak Ulaeto, 2014 Commonwealth Scholar from Nigeria (PhD Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Surrey)
The final presentations on ‘Wealth of a nation: assessing my country’ featured two Scholar perspectives:
- Ruth Muigai, 2014 Commonwealth Scholar from Kenya (LLM Human Rights, University of East London)
- Umana Nnochiri, 2014 Commonwealth Professional Fellow from Nigeria (Education, Economic Growth, and Environment, Learn to Re-create)
